Tyranny of the Minority
Current Affairs December 10th, 2006One rabbi decides he doesn’t like Christmas trees in the airport, so they go. My (charitable) response: If they want menorahs in the Israeli airports, good for them. Now, let us represent our heritage without the complaining of a few, thank you very much. It’s not like Christmas trees have much religious significance anyway (as any good fundamentalist will tell you).
Update: Trees Are Back Up (It seems the rabbi is willing to talk to the people about getting a menorah up next year rather than suing; he says he didn’t really want to bring the trees down, just get a menorah up)

Big differnce ,israel is a jewish state so they can display whatever jewish in their airports while the US is not a christian state although the majority in it are christians It is the seperation of church and state thing?

Israel is not technically Jewish as a state but secular, like the USA. But would anyone care if they put up a menorah in an airport? Probably not since their culture is primarily Jewish. I would love to see a menorah at the Seattle airport along with the trees. But why not work with the people rather than sue? That’s my only issue.

I listened to an interview of the rabbi, he said he never wanted them to take down the trees, just include the menorah as well.

Dave,
Thanks for the correction. It seems the airport people overreacted then. I’ll correct the post when I get home.

It’s an easy thing to confuse. It sounds like he wanted them gone, it sounded like he was going to sue. What things sound like and wha they are can be different I suppose.
