Every Man Has Forgotten…
Catholic, General July 26th, 2006Every man has forgotten who he is. One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God; but thou shalt not know thyself. We are all under the same mental calamity; we have forgotten our names. We have forgotten what we really are. All that we call common sense and rationality and practicality and positivism only means that for certain dead levels of our lives we forget that we have forgotten. All that we call spirit and art and ecstacy only means that for one awful instant we remember that we forgot.

If you keep posting stuff from Chesteron I won’t have to read his book.

CubicleRev,
I don’t think I’d have enough time to post everything I like about this book! I started highlighting the good material and then putting asterisks by the great insights and finally circled the astounding points. My copy is a mess, but it’s worth it. Orthodoxy is an awesome book and, along with the works of C.S. Lewis, one of the few recent works that really speaks to me.
