Summers Gone as Harvard President
Current Affairs February 21st, 2006He violated the cardinal rule of the academy: under no circumstances shalt thou question feminist assumptions.
It’s sad because universities could use more people like Larry Summers.

Didn’t that guy get kicked out months ago for making comments like that?

About 18 months back Larry Summers did a short piece for Harvard Alumni Magazine. He was speculating on what is is about Harvard that keeps it on top (or so he thought).
His answer was that at Harvard the idea was always triumphant over authority. I thought at the time that the fellow really believes that he is free of authority (in thought and expression).
His subsequent history shows that he did indeed so believe. The authority of the liberal academic establishment nailed him rather brutally.
As C. S. Lewis tells us in “The Abolition of Man” there is always an authority. It is just a question of whether it will be God or the group that happens to have the upper hand.
