The Bishop of Calgary, Fred Henry, has said he would not give communion to Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. Martin is not only pushing same sex marriage in Canada, but is forcing his cabinet to vote with the government and not according to their conscience. According to the Catholic Church this is doubly wrong. He is also pro-abortion. I applaud Bishop Henry for boldly standing up for Church Teaching even when he will no doubt encounter harsh criticism. My favorite quote, that makes an important point about excommunication (in italics, emphasis mine):

Life issues and marriage certainly are at the very heart and so you’re
not free to pick and choose about these issues. You’re either with the
Church or you’re not and if you’re not with the Church, it’s not the
Church that’s giving you the hard time, YOU are separating yourself
from the Body of Christ and that becomes a personal decision that you
have to deal with.
