Catholic Myths 101
Catholic, Misconceptions July 26th, 2004Even as an Anglican, I heard all of the Catholic misconceptions. Sometimes they came from honest, charitable people who had simply uncritically believed all they had read on the internet. Many times they came from people whose hatred of the Catholic Church was thinly veiled. Unfortunately, anti-Catholicism has a long history (especially in the USA) and with that comes a long list of lies, half truths, and distortions. For the next few weeks I’m going to start posting some “Catholic Misconceptions” and tell what the Catholic Church really teaches. Although I may elaborate, I will largely post official documents and let them speak for themselves. If in doubt, just go to the source! This won’t be the sole purpose of this blog, but it should be interesting.

I’ve heard throughout some headlines that the 3 wisemen did not see Jesus until he was 2. Also, that there were more than 3. Is this true?

Laura,
It mentions that the wise men “went to the house” and came “after Jesus was born.” Also, the Church even celebrates the coming of the wise men after Christmas (on Jan. 6th). So, it’s unlikely they were at his birth. How late, though, the Bible doesn’t say.
Also, the Bible never mentions the number of wise men. People have assumed since there were three gifts there were three people.
Merry Christmas,
Jonathan
